How to press a Chinese incense seal — six steps from loosening ash to lighting the seal

The incense seal ritual — six steps

1. Loosen the ash: stir the ash clockwise with the incense chopstick until even and airy.

2. Level the ash: press it flat with the ash tamper (灰押).

3. Place the mould:set the seal mould (香篆) in the centre of the censer.

4. Fill with powder: fill the mould evenly with the spade (香铲).

5. Lift the mould: lift it gently; the powder keeps its seal shape.

6. Light & enjoy: light the end and let the seal burn slowly, filling the room with sandalwood.

Five ways to use fragrance powder

1. Incense seal (xiāng zhuàn / 印香): press the powder into a seal mould and light it slowly.

2. DIY incense sticks & cones: blend with a natural binder (try 90g powder to 10g binder) and shape.

3. Electric incense warmer: gentle low-temperature warming releases the aroma without smoke.

4. Indirect heating (隔火空熏): warm a small pile over an ash bed for a clean, subtle scent.

5. Everyday space & car: a pinch in a burner fills a room or a car with quiet calm.

FAQ

What does Indonesian agarwood smell like?

Rich, mellow and refined — a full, smooth fragrance that brings a calm, grounded atmosphere to office or tea time.

What is an incense seal (xiang zhan)?

An incense seal (香篆, xiāng zhuàn) is a traditional Chinese way of burning loose incense powder: the powder is pressed into a mould in the shape of a seal or pattern, then lit at one end so it burns slowly and evenly.

Can I make my own incense sticks or cones with this powder?

Yes. Blend about 90g of sandalwood powder with 10g of a natural binder (such as makko or joss powder), add water drop by drop until it forms a clay-like dough, then shape into sticks or cones and dry them in a warm, airy place.

Is this powder scented or synthetic?

No. It is 100% natural Australian sandalwood, ground into a fine powder with no synthetic fragrance and no fillers added.

How should I store the powder?

Keep the jar sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture. Natural incense powder keeps well and its aroma deepens over time.

Can I use it with an electric incense warmer?

Yes. A low-temperature electric warmer releases the sandalwood aroma gently without open flame or smoke, which is convenient for desks, meditation and travel.

How long does a pressed incense seal burn?

Depending on the powder and mould size, a pressed seal usually burns slowly for roughly 15 to 30 minutes.
